AAU Lecturer Dies in Edo Hotel, Police Arrest 3 Suspects

Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, slumped and died inside a hotel room in the Mosco area of Ekpoma on Sunday. The incident followed an alleged sexual encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker, identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

Police Confirm Arrests and Investigation

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the development on Tuesday, October 6. The spokesperson for the command, Eno Ikoedem, stated that three people were taken into custody in connection with the death: the hotel owner, the hotel manager, and the sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob. Investigations are ongoing.

Ikoedem added that Uwuigbe's body has been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.

University Confirms Lecturer's Employment

The Public Relations Officer of Ambrose Alli University, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a staff member of the institution. However, Aladenika noted that the incident did not occur on the university's campus and took place outside of the school's jurisdiction.

Ambrose Alli University is a state-owned institution located in Ekpoma, administered by the Edo State Government.

In a separate development, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) announced the cut-off marks for university admission to 140 and above. Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the JAMB registrar, announced this on Saturday, June 24, at a presentation of the 2023 Policy Meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions and Awards in Abuja.
