Abia Police Command Refutes Viral Boko Haram Arrest Claims as Misleading Old Video
The Abia State Police Command has issued a strong denial regarding a viral report that claimed 488 members of the Boko Haram terrorist group were arrested within the state. In an official statement, the police described the circulating video as not only false but also dangerously misleading, warning the public against spreading such unverified information that could incite fear and disrupt public peace.
Police Clarify Video is Over a Decade Old
According to the statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, the viral video in question is not a recent broadcast. The police explained that the footage was recorded more than 11 years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in Abia State. "The command wishes to clarify that this video is an old broadcast, and it is being circulated out of context to create unnecessary panic," the statement emphasized.
Authorities Warn Against Spreading False Information
The police have urged citizens to disregard the viral claim and continue with their lawful activities without apprehension. Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa specifically warned that spreading false information could disturb public peace and security, and those found guilty of such acts would face legal consequences. "Anyone involved in disseminating fake news will be arrested and prosecuted under relevant laws, including the Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrime Act," he stated.
Commitment to Security and Public Cooperation
In their statement, the police reaffirmed their role as the lead internal security agency, assuring residents of their continued dedication to safeguarding lives and property. The command called on the public to support their security efforts by:
- Rejecting fake news and misinformation
- Relying only on credible and verified sources for information
- Staying alert and working together to maintain peace
"We urge all citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure a safe environment for everyone," the statement concluded, highlighting the importance of community involvement in combating security threats.
