Achievers University Uncovers N457.5 Million School Fees Fraud

Achievers University in Owo, Ondo State, has uncovered a massive school fees fraud amounting to N457.5 million, involving a former bursary staff member, 320 students, and several other individuals. The scandal came to light during a routine audit of students' fee payments covering the 2023/2024, 2024/2025, and 2025/2026 academic sessions.

How the Fraud Was Executed

According to a statement issued by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oyesoji Aremu, the fraud was masterminded by a former female staff member who had studied Accounting at the university before working in the bursary department. The suspect allegedly convinced students to pay their school fees into her personal bank account by promising them discounts and commissions. She and her collaborators also tampered with the university's payment portal, ensuring that students who paid into the private account still received financial clearance as if they had paid the institution directly.

Extent of the Fraud

The university revealed that about 320 students paid a total of N457,508,645 into the woman's account, none of which reached the institution. The statement also indicated that 11 staff members, 34 students, and another person employed at the Federal Medical Centre were allegedly involved in recruiting students into the fraudulent scheme.

Disciplinary Actions and Police Involvement

The university has stated that all students linked to the case will appear before the Students' Disciplinary Committee, while staff members accused of acting as agents will face the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee. The former employee is currently under police investigation and could face prosecution. The Nigeria Police Force spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed that the main suspect has been arrested and that investigations are ongoing.

Ongoing Audit

The university has announced that the audit exercise will continue, including a review of fee payments made by students who graduated within the last two academic sessions. This expanded audit aims to uncover any additional irregularities and ensure accountability.

Previous Warnings Against Social Vices

This is not the first time Achievers University has taken a strong stance against misconduct. Earlier, the institution warned students against social vices and misuse of social media, revealing that over 15 students had been expelled for video-related offences, while others were dismissed for fraud, drug abuse, and misconduct. University officials urged students to use social media responsibly and avoid behaviors that could damage their future.

The university remains committed to maintaining high standards of integrity and discipline among its students and staff.
