Adichie Accuses Euracare of Negligence Over Son's Death

Chimamanda Adichie has publicly accused Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos of medical negligence and obstructing an inquest into the death of her son, Nkanu Nnamdi. The award-winning Nigerian author released a letter to the hospital, stating that silence would enable wrongdoing.

Allegations of Negligence

Adichie alleged that Euracare initially requested an inquest in January due to 'rumours of negligence' but later frustrated the process. She shared a statement on Instagram on Saturday, claiming the facility failed in its duty of care and is working to block the truth.

Nkanu, one of twin boys born via surrogate in 2024, died on January 7, 2026, after a short illness. The family claims complications arose at Euracare during sedation for an MRI after a referral from another facility. The hospital denies wrongdoing, stating care met international standards and the child arrived critically ill.

Adichie's Letter

In her letter dated April 16, 2026, Adichie recounted her son's life and alleged that a consultant anaesthesiologist administered medication despite concerns from another doctor. She claimed this contributed to the death and accused the hospital of concealing responsibility.

She further alleged that a senior figure linked to the hospital's ownership discouraged legal action, warning it could damage her reputation. 'What a manipulative and implicitly threatening message to send to a parent whose child died in your hospital,' she wrote.

Demand for Justice

Adichie maintained that her family will continue seeking justice and transparency, insisting only a full independent inquiry can provide answers. She expressed gratitude to supporters worldwide for their prayers and condolences, noting the immense burden of grief.

An inquest is underway, with some doctors suspended pending investigations. Euracare has expressed condolences but maintains its position.
