A 21-year-old Austrian national, identified only as Hasan E, is facing execution by beheading in Saudi Arabia for his alleged role in a terrorist attack in Mecca, and his case is linked to the foiled plot to attack a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna.
Suspected Terrorist Network and Failed Concert Plot
Hasan E is accused of being an accomplice of Beran A, the man who planned a terror attack on Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concert in Vienna in August 2024. The plot was disrupted by authorities, who found explosives, knives, and plans for a massacre. The concert was cancelled, disappointing 200,000 fans and Swift herself. Beran A was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his involvement. Another conspirator, Arda K, who was not part of the Swift plot but was linked to the jihadist cell, received a 12-year sentence.
Stabbing Attack in Mecca
According to Austrian media reports, Hasan E is alleged to have carried out a stabbing spree in Mecca on March 11, 2024. He is accused of purchasing a knife at a fruit and vegetable market and then stabbing a security guard in the neck in front of the Al-Haram Mosque. He then allegedly attacked four more people. All five victims survived. He was arrested the same day and has been in custody ever since.
Extradition Attempts Fail
Hasan E has reportedly attempted to be extradited from Saudi Arabia back to Austria to avoid the possibility of beheading, but these efforts have failed. The Austrian Foreign Ministry has confirmed that it is providing consular support and maintaining regular contact with the Austrian national. The verdict in his trial is expected soon.
Link Between Hasan E and Beran A
Investigations revealed that Hasan E was allegedly a jihadist mentor and former schoolmate of Beran A. During Hasan E's trial in Saudi Arabia, defendants described him as the driving force behind terrorist plans. While Beran A and Arda K did not carry out their attacks, Hasan E is the only one believed to have followed through with his plan.
