Anambra Government Demolishes Brothel, Uncovers Cache of Hard Drugs, Arrests 38 Suspects
The Anambra State Government has taken decisive action against criminal activities by demolishing the Airtight Guest House in Awka, following a night raid that led to the arrest of 20 suspected sex workers and 18 male customers. The operation, conducted on Sunday, March 29, 2026, uncovered a significant cache of illicit drugs and a firearm at the facility, which authorities described as a brothel and den for criminals and drug peddlers.
Major Security Operation in Awka
Located at Y-Junction, Okpuno, in Awka South Local Government Area, the guest house was targeted by Agunaechemba security operatives as part of a crackdown on illegal activities. The raid revealed a large quantity of hard drugs, including Tramadol, Indian hemp, nitrous oxide, Rohypnol, and other substances, alongside a locally made single-barrel gun. Evidence of prostitution was also found, violating the state's security laws.
Ken Emeakayi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, who led the operation, emphasized that the demolition was carried out in accordance with the Anambra Homeland Security Law. This law empowers the government to seize properties used for crimes such as kidnapping, drug trafficking, and other illicit activities.
Government Issues Warning to Property Owners
Emeakayi stated, "The Anambra State Government demolished the facility in line with the Homeland Security Law, which empowers the government to take over any property used for kidnapping, drugs, and other crimes." He added that this action serves as a stern warning to property owners to verify the identity and activities of their tenants before leasing properties, to avoid being implicated in criminal networks.
During the operation, additional arrests were made, including the manager, supervisor, storekeeper, and bar attendant of the guest house. The manager, Paul Chike, claimed he was merely managing the business on behalf of the owner and had attempted to restrict prostitutes from bringing clients to lodge at the facility. He also alleged that the recovered firearm was abandoned by a guest.
