Amobi Family in Anambra Alleges Intimidation, Seeks Police Protection Amid Insecurity
Residents of Ogidi in Idemili North Local Council of Anambra State have voiced deep concerns over rising insecurity, following serious allegations by the Amobi royal family that they are enduring persistent intimidation from suspected thugs within the community. A principal member of the family, Kene Amobi, addressed journalists at the family's residence, revealing that members now live in constant fear due to sustained harassment and threats allegedly orchestrated by certain groups in the area.
Atmosphere of Anxiety and Fear
According to Amobi, the level of intimidation has created an overwhelming atmosphere of anxiety, compelling family members to remain cautious about speaking openly on the matter. He alleged that the individuals behind criminal activities in Ogidi are emboldened by the support of some influential people in the community, making it extremely difficult for residents to challenge them without risking severe reprisals. This situation has left the family feeling under siege, with their safety and peace of mind severely compromised.
Targeting Security Initiatives
Amobi further claimed that these same elements have deliberately targeted security initiatives introduced by the family and its members in the Diaspora to improve safety in the community. He explained that concerned family members abroad recently funded the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras across some streets in Ogidi as part of efforts to curb criminal activities. This initiative was spearheaded by a Diaspora leader of the family in New York, Dr. Odinaka Amobi, who also supported road rehabilitation efforts in the area through sand filling of some streets.
However, in a distressing turn of events, Amobi alleged that some of the CCTV cameras were later vandalized and carted away by unidentified persons. "Our Diaspora family members came up with the idea of installing CCTV cameras to check the rising insecurity in our community. Unfortunately, some of these cameras were vandalized and removed," he stated. This act of vandalism has undermined the family's efforts to enhance security and has heightened their sense of vulnerability.
Appeal for Urgent Intervention
The incident has been reported to the police, with Amobi imploring security agencies and the state government to urgently intervene to protect members of the family and restore peace in the area. "We are appealing to the police and the government to come to our rescue because the intimidation is becoming unbearable," he emphasized. The family's plea highlights the critical need for immediate action to address the escalating tensions and ensure the safety of all residents in Ogidi.
Police Response
When contacted, the Spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the Command had not received any official report regarding the alleged intimidation. "I am just hearing of the situation for the first time, and there was no such report before the Command," Ikenga said. This response underscores a potential gap in communication or reporting, raising questions about the effectiveness of current mechanisms for addressing such security concerns in the community.
The allegations by the Amobi family shed light on broader issues of insecurity and intimidation in Anambra, calling for enhanced vigilance and collaborative efforts between residents, police, and government authorities to foster a safer environment.
