The Anambra State Government has officially denied reports circulating on social media and other platforms that Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has introduced a new burial law. The alleged law was said to impose restrictions on condolence visits and the use of cows and goats during funeral ceremonies.
Government Statement on False Reports
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the state government described the reports as entirely false, baseless, and a deliberate act of misinformation. The government clarified that no new burial law has been enacted by the Soludo administration. The only existing law remains the Anambra Burial Law of 2019, which was signed by former Governor Willie Obiano.
Refutation of Specific Claims
The statement specifically refuted allegations that cows and goats have been banned during condolence visits, calling such assertions fabricated and intended to mislead the public. According to the government, these claims are not contained in any section of the 2019 law.
Criticism of Media Reporting
The state government also criticized some media organizations for publishing unverified reports without proper fact-checking. It warned that the spread of misinformation could undermine public trust and create unnecessary tension among residents.
Appeal to the Public
The government urged residents and members of the public to disregard the viral claims and rely only on official communication channels of the Anambra State Government for accurate information regarding government policies and regulations.
The statement was signed by Law Mefor, Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, on May 19, 2026.
