Anambra Police Apprehend Alleged Fake JAMB Coordinator in Atani

The Anambra State Police Command has made a significant arrest over the weekend, detaining an individual accused of posing as a fraudulent Coordinator for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The operation took place in the Atani area, where law enforcement officials recovered eight JAMB examination slips and other incriminating items linked to the ongoing 2026 examinations.

Details of the Arrest and Investigation

According to Police Public Relations Officer Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect has been identified as Eric Nwombu. He was taken into custody on charges of criminal impersonation and unlawful possession of examination materials that belong to JAMB. Nwombu allegedly claimed to be a Coordinator at an Atani Centre for the 2026 JAMB examination, raising suspicions among local residents and authorities.

In addition to the eight JAMB examination slips, police recovered an exercise book containing the names and examination numbers of students. Ikenga noted that Nwombu could not provide a satisfactory explanation for possessing these items, further implicating him in potential fraudulent activities.

How the Incident Unfolded

The arrest was initiated following a report that the suspect was collecting 2026 JAMB examination slips from students who had visited a cyber cafe in Atani to check their examination centers. Upon being questioned, Nwombu reportedly asserted his role as a JAMB 2026 Coordinator in the area. However, staff at the computer center grew dissatisfied with his responses and became suspicious of his actions, prompting them to alert police operatives stationed nearby.

When the police arrived on the scene, Nwombu attempted to flee but was swiftly apprehended by the officers. This quick response prevented any further potential harm or disruption to the examination process.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings and Police Commitment

Preliminary investigations have already commenced, and the case is set to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for a more discreet and thorough inquiry. Ikenga reiterated the commitment of Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu to safeguarding the integrity of public examinations across Anambra State.

The police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activities related to examinations or other public services. This arrest underscores the ongoing efforts to combat fraud and ensure the credibility of educational assessments in Nigeria.
