Anambra Anti-Touting Squad Destroys N80 Million Worth of Illegal Drugs, Issues Stern Warning
The Special Anti-Touting Squad of Anambra State (SASA) has carried out a major enforcement operation targeting illicit drug activities in Onitsha and surrounding areas, culminating in the public destruction of hard drugs valued at a staggering N80 million. The operation, conducted on Thursday, April 2, 2026, represents a significant blow to drug networks operating within the state.
Zero Tolerance Stance Against Drug Abuse
During the exercise, the state director of SASA, Monday Nwokoye, reiterated the agency's firm zero-tolerance stance on drug abuse and touting. "Drugs must stop in Anambra. Anyone caught will be dealt with decisively," he warned emphatically. Nwokoye described drug dealers and distributors as criminals whose activities pose a serious threat to public safety, noting that drug abuse fuels theft, violence, and broader insecurity within the state.
Karen James, SASA's media aide, explained that the drugs were recovered and confiscated during several raids and operations within Onitsha and environs. She emphasized that the exercise, which drew widespread public attention, demonstrates SASA's unwavering commitment to dismantling drug networks and curbing criminality across Anambra State.
Strategic Destruction Across Multiple Locations
The destroyed substances were seized from multiple strategic locations across various local government areas, including:
- Nsugbe in Anambra East local government area
- Umuchu in Aguata local government area
- Ojoto and Oba in Idemili South local government area
- Nkpor in Idemili North local government area
- Nkwelle Ezunaka in Oyi local government area
- The Greater Onitsha area
Nwokoye stressed that the destruction was intentional and irreversible, ensuring that the confiscated drugs cannot re-enter the market. "The destruction was carried out publicly to send a clear message that drug-related activities will not be tolerated in Anambra State," he stated.
Community Cooperation Essential for Success
The SASA director called on residents to actively support law enforcement efforts by reporting suspicious activities, noting that community cooperation remains essential to sustaining a safe and secure society. "We appeal to the public, if you see something, say something. Together, we can build a safer and healthier Anambra state," he concluded.
Regarding the fate of drug dealers involved, Nwokoye revealed that the majority fled when their hideouts were stormed during the raids. Those who were arrested have been handed over to appropriate law enforcement operatives for diligent prosecution.
Governor Soludo's Support Commended
SASA officials commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his continued support and commitment toward strengthening security operations across the state. The agency noted that their efforts align with the mandate given by Governor Soludo when SASA was established. "SASA remains resolute in its mandate to eliminate drug abuse, touting, and other forms of criminality within Anambra state," the agency affirmed.
This major drug destruction operation comes as part of broader security initiatives in Anambra State, where authorities are intensifying efforts to combat various forms of criminality and ensure public safety for all residents.
