Atiku Alarmed by Suspicious Credit to Private Bank Account

Former Vice President of Nigeria and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has raised the alarm over a suspicious credit into one of his private bank accounts, describing the circumstances as “deeply troubling.” The transaction, labeled “Contribution Electioneering Campaign,” was neither solicited nor authorized by him or his campaign, according to a statement issued by his senior special assistant on public communication, Phrank Shaibu.

Unauthorized Transaction Raises Security Concerns

Atiku revealed that an unknown person deposited money into his private account, which is not in the public domain. The statement emphasized that neither Atiku nor his campaign had any knowledge of the individual or entity behind the payment. “The transfer originated from a person totally unknown to His Excellency. Neither His Excellency nor his campaign solicited, authorized or has any knowledge of the individual or entity behind the unauthorised payment,” the statement read.

The former vice-president questioned how the unknown individual obtained the confidential banking details of his private account. “The account is a strictly private one whose details are not in the public domain. This raises a fundamental question: How did unknown persons obtain the confidential banking details of a private citizen?” he asked.

Implications for Financial Privacy of Nigerians

Atiku warned that if his private banking information could be accessed by unknown persons, the wider implication is that the financial details of ordinary Nigerians are also at risk. “If the private banking information of a former Vice President and a leading presidential candidate can be accessed and deployed for reasons yet unknown, then no Nigerian’s financial privacy is safe,” he said.

He expressed concern that the account details may have been obtained by individuals with privileged access, which, if established, would amount to “a grave abuse of power capable of exposing the account holder to kidnappers, terrorists, bandits, fraudsters and other criminal elements.”

Political Motives Ahead of 2027 Election

The ADC standard-bearer described the incident as part of a series of “suspicious activities” ahead of the 2027 general election. He asserted that the incident would not distract him from his political ambitions. “As political activities gather momentum, Nigerians should not be distracted by these tired tactics that smack of character assassination. Such desperate antics have failed before and will fail again. The Waziri Adamawa remains focused on offering Nigerians credible leadership and practical solutions to the nation’s challenges,” he added.

Background and Public Reaction

Atiku, a prominent political figure and former vice president, has been a candidate in multiple presidential elections, including the 2023 elections where he ran under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) before defecting to the ADC. His campaign has been vocal about issues of transparency and security, and this latest development underscores concerns about data privacy in Nigeria’s banking sector.

The statement, shared on social media by Phrank Shaibu, has sparked public debate about the safety of personal financial information and the potential for abuse by those with access to sensitive data. Observers note that the timing, so close to the 2027 elections, raises questions about possible political motivations behind the unauthorized credit.

Legal and Security Implications

Legal experts suggest that unauthorized access to bank details and transactions could constitute a breach of banking confidentiality and privacy laws. The incident highlights the need for stronger data protection measures in Nigeria’s financial system. Security analysts also warn that such leaks could expose individuals to criminal activities, including kidnapping and fraud.

Atiku has called on relevant authorities to investigate the source of the unauthorized payment and the leak of his banking information. He reiterated his commitment to serving Nigeria, stating that he remains focused on offering credible leadership and practical solutions to the nation’s challenges.
