The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of a 51-year-old man accused of witchcraft in the Dandango area. The victim, Monday Chiroma, was attacked alongside another resident, Yelwa Bango, by a group of men who accused them of bewitching a 20-year-old woman, Jamila Anthony, who later died while receiving treatment.
Details of the Incident
According to a statement released on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, by the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, the attack occurred on July 20, 2026, at approximately 2330 hours. The suspects allegedly conspired and attacked the duo on suspicion of witchcraft. The victims were rushed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi for medical attention. Chiroma was pronounced dead on arrival, while Bango was treated and admitted.
Police Report and Arrests
The police report, received on July 21, 2026, at about 1230 hours, was filed by Mr. Bala (other names withheld) of Danga Security and another man from Dandango. They presented the lifeless body of Monday Chiroma. Preliminary investigations identified ten suspects: Danjuma Anthony, 25; Ayuba Anthony, 22 (aka Babaru); Christopher Adamu, 34; Peter Monday (aka Maimako); Joshua Christopher; Babangida Monday; Ali Yakubu; Iliya Yakubu (aka Ashe); Sati Monday; and Bulus Monday (aka Gagau).
Following a swift response by operatives of E-Division Yelwa, three suspects were arrested: Danjuma Anthony, Ayuba Anthony, and Christopher Adamu. During interrogation, they confessed to the offence. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects who are currently at large.
Commissioner’s Condemnation
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, mni, psc(+), condemned the incident in strong terms. He urged the public to shun violence and jungle justice, and to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims and maintaining law and order across the state. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Bauchi for discreet investigation and prosecution.
