A Nigerian lady, Chidimma Precious, has narrated how her younger brother's birthmark saved him from being switched at birth. The incident occurred at the hospital where her mother delivered him. Chidinma shared the story on Facebook on May 8, alongside pictures of herself and her brother.
How the Birthmark Prevented a Switch
Chidinma, who was present in the labour room, explained that the doctor insisted on a caesarean section (C-section) even though it was unnecessary. The baby's head was almost out, but the doctor warned the mother not to push. As staff rushed to prepare the theatre, the mother suddenly gave birth naturally. The baby had a visible birthmark on his eyebrows.
Chidinma stated: "My brother's birthmark is the reason he is still my brother today. I was with my mother in the labour room when she gave birth to our lastborn. The doctor kept insisting it must be CS even when there was no indication. My mom felt something fishy from the doctor and the matron from the other hospital that referred us."
She added: "Even when baby's head was almost out, the doctor kept warning my mother never to push. They rushed to the theatre to get it prepared when all of a sudden my mom gave birth to my brother before my very eyes. He was born with a very visible birthmark on his eyebrows."
Her mother, though weak, used her legs to hold the baby and instructed Chidinma to watchful. "Anyone who enters the room to carry the baby, I should tell them that we are aware of his long visible birthmark," she said. The doctor was visibly angry when he returned and saw the birth had occurred naturally.
Doctor and Matron Later Arrested
Years later, Chidinma learned that the doctor and matron were arrested for attempting to steal a baby. This confirmed the suspicion they had during her brother's delivery.
Mixed Reactions from Social Media
The story elicited various reactions online. Dahlia Virtuous commented: "Be very vigilant when in labor. Switching of babies isn't a new story. I wish men would sit up and learn these things." Ruth Njideka said: "Na Jehovah quickly dotted that birthmark on your brother before he was born. That made him standout so no amount of manipulation from them to take your brother would have succeeded."
Chika Ekechukwu Chamberlain noted: "That's why some marriages have issues due to failed DNA tests. Every gender is a gift from the Almighty." Ria Desmond shared: "I was alone with the nurses but I was healthy after delivery. I watched them clean my baby all through." Mary Adzovi said: "When I had my baby, I didn't allow them to take him away for a bath. I refused. I cleaned him myself."
Related Incident: Baby Switch Lawsuit
In a similar case, a couple sued a hospital after discovering their child was switched at birth. The father conducted a DNA test and found his daughter was not biologically his. The wife also tested and proved she was not the biological mother. The hospital was held responsible.
