Bomb Explosion Rocks Bayelsa State Secretariat, Suspect Arrested in Yenagoa
An improvised explosive device (IED) was detonated early Wednesday, February 11, at the Bayelsa State Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa, the state capital. The explosion occurred at approximately 6:00 am, causing panic and temporarily disrupting official activities. Security agencies responded immediately to the incident, with the Bayelsa State Police Command confirming the event and taking swift action.
Police Response and Containment Efforts
According to a statement by Musa Mohammed, the police spokesperson in Bayelsa, Commissioner of Police Iyamah Daniel led the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Special Drone Unit, and other tactical teams to the scene. Upon arrival, operatives contained the explosion, cordoned off the area, and conducted a detailed search. During this operation, one unexploded IED was identified and rendered safe by EOD personnel. No lives were lost, and no property was destroyed as a result of the blast.
Arrest and Investigation of Suspect
The police arrested one suspect, Pentecost Elijah, a 60-year-old male from Otuan Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, at the scene in connection with the incident. He is currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department and will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation. Authorities have assured the public that the situation is under control and normalcy has been restored, urging residents to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities.

In a related development, the Bayelsa State Police Command announced that it has begun interrogating four personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). These officers allegedly accompanied Bodmas Kemepadei to Amassoma Community, where Patrick Peresoudei was arrested, taken to Kemepadei’s residence in Yenagoa, and reportedly subjected to torture prior to his death. The State Criminal Investigation Department is also reportedly interrogating the Investigating Team attached to Operation Restore Peace (Operation Puff Adder). Commissioner Daniel appealed to the public for understanding during these investigations.
This incident follows previous security concerns in Bayelsa, including reports of a pastor hiring assassins and other violent events. The police continue to emphasize their commitment to maintaining safety and order in the state.
