Borno Mosque and Police Dismiss Social Media Bomb Scare as Baseless in Maiduguri
The management of Malam Bako Mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State, has categorically denied social media reports alleging that unidentified individuals attempted to plant a bomb on its premises. In an official statement released on Tuesday, mosque authorities described the claims as false and misleading, emphasizing that the worship center and its surrounding Layin Hadiza neighborhood remain calm and secure for residents and worshippers alike.
Mosque Authorities Issue Clarification to Calm Public Fears
In a detailed statement titled "Official Statement from the Management of Malam Bako Mosque, Layin Hadiza," the management sought to address the circulating misinformation directly. They stated, "The message currently circulating on social media claiming that some individuals came to plant a bomb in the mosque is completely false and unfounded." The mosque further reassured the community that no such incident occurred within or around its premises, highlighting the ongoing peace and safety of the area.
The management appealed to the public to disregard the viral message and refrain from sharing unverified information that could incite unnecessary panic. "We urge members of the public to avoid spreading unverified information that may cause fear and panic in the community," the statement added, underscoring the importance of responsible communication in times of heightened security awareness.
Police Support Mosque's Denial and Call for Vigilance
The Borno State Police Command has echoed the mosque's dismissal of the bomb scare report, labeling it as unfounded. Police spokesperson Nahum Daso confirmed in a telephone interview that the claims lack any factual basis. "It is an unfounded report. Therefore, we call on the public to maintain high vigilance and desist from sharing fake information," Daso stated, reinforcing the need for community alertness without succumbing to misinformation.
This joint response from mosque authorities and law enforcement aims to quell rumors and prevent the escalation of fear, particularly in a region where security remains a critical concern due to past incidents of violence.
Background of Security Concerns in Borno State
Despite the recent clarification, security issues persist in parts of Borno State, which has faced sporadic attacks by insurgent groups over the years. For instance, in December of the previous year, a bomb explosion at Al-Adum Juma'at Mosque near Gamboru Market in Maiduguri during evening prayers resulted in at least five fatalities and numerous injuries. Such events have heightened anxieties about the safety of public spaces and worship centers across the state.
The current incident underscores the ongoing challenges in managing public perception and security in conflict-affected areas, where false information can quickly amplify existing fears. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents to rely on official sources for accurate updates.
