Singer Britney Spears has been formally charged with driving under the influence in California, nearly two months after her arrest. The 44-year-old pop star, who was taken into custody on March 4, now faces criminal charges.
Charges Filed
Ventura County prosecutors have charged Spears with one count of misdemeanor DUI. According to the Ventura County District Attorney's office, Spears, who is currently in rehab, is scheduled for arraignment at Ventura County Superior Court on Monday morning, May 4.
It remains uncertain whether Spears will appear in court personally. Since the charge is a misdemeanor, the celebrity is not required to attend, and her attorney could represent her.
Potential Plea Bargain
The Ventura County District Attorney's office stated that Spears will be offered a 'wet reckless' plea. This allows the charged person to plead guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol or drugs. The plea bargain is typically reserved for defendants with no prior DUI history, low blood alcohol levels, no injury or crash involved, and those showing self-motivation to address underlying issues through rehabilitation or a drug and alcohol program.
Arrest Details
At the time of her arrest, the pop star was taken into custody by California Highway Patrol around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, in Ventura County following several 911 calls. Spears, who had been seen driving and behaving erratically, was released the next morning, according to Ventura County Sheriff records.
Representative's Statement
Representatives for Spears released a statement in response to the arrest, saying: 'This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully, this can be the first step in a long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney's life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time. Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.'
