Canadian officer charged with threatening Trump online

A police officer from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has been arrested for allegedly making threats against U.S. President Donald Trump online. The RCMP Federal Policing Eastern Region announced that Evenson Dumerlus, 34, of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, was taken into custody after posting a video on his Snapchat account containing threatening comments directed at Trump.

Incident during G7 Summit

Authorities stated that the alleged video was recorded while Dumerlus was deployed on security operations for the G7 summit last summer. President Trump attended the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, which took place from June 15 to 17, 2025. The RCMP officer reportedly made the threats while on duty.

Investigation and charges

The case was referred to the Special Investigations Unit after another RCMP officer reported the video. Investigators reviewed the evidence and acted swiftly, removing Dumerlus from his duties on the same day the incident occurred. He now faces a charge of uttering threats. Dumerlus is scheduled to appear at the St-Jean-sur-Richelieu courthouse on July 30.

In a statement, the RCMP emphasized, “The RCMP takes seriously any threats that can affect one’s sense of security. Violent statements will not be tolerated.” The force also encouraged the public to report similar activities to the police.

U.S. Secret Service response

Joe Routh, a spokesperson for the U.S. Secret Service, confirmed to CBC that the agency is aware of the social media post allegedly made by the officer. However, he declined to comment further, stating, “Out of concern for operational security, we do not discuss matters of protective intelligence.”
