A suspected chemical odour caused widespread panic at Our Lady of Apostle Secondary School, located at Epe Garage in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, shortly after the morning assembly, resulting in approximately 30 students and one teacher being rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. School Management's Response
The Vice Principal of the school, Mrs. Adeola Borogun, clarified that the event was not a gas explosion but rather a strange chemical smell detected within the school premises. She explained that several students began experiencing severe symptoms, including vomiting and fainting, which necessitated a swift call for ambulances from the State General Hospital in Ijebu Ode. Mrs. Borogun emphasized that the school acted promptly to ensure the safety and well-being of all affected individuals.
Medical Confirmation and Condition of Victims
Dr. Banjo Adeoye, the Chief Medical Director of the State General Hospital in Ijebu Ode, confirmed that a total of 30 students and one teacher were admitted for treatment following the incident. He reported that most of the affected individuals are in stable condition, with medical staff closely monitoring their recovery. However, Dr. Adeoye noted that the exact chemical substance responsible for the odour and subsequent health issues has not yet been identified, highlighting the need for further investigation.
Environmental and Governmental Actions
In response to the distress call, Dr. Mrs. Kafayat Lawal, the Permanent Secretary of the Ogun State Ministry of Environment, disclosed that officials were swiftly deployed to the scene. She stated that the situation at the school had already been brought under control by the time the team arrived, after which they proceeded to the hospital to assess the victims. Dr. Lawal added that environmental officers have been assigned to conduct a thorough evaluation and analysis of the air quality within the school environment to determine the source of the chemical odour and prevent future occurrences.

Hon. Dare Alebiosu, the Chairman of Ijebu Ode Local Government, visited the hospital to check on the affected students and teacher. Alebiosu assured parents and residents that a full investigation will be carried out to uncover the cause of the chemical exposure.
