Court remands Justice Crack in SSS custody

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of social critic Justice Chidebere, popularly known as “Justice Crack,” in the custody of the State Security Services (SSS). The ruling was delivered by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik on a three-count charge that includes alleged cybercrime, felony, and breach of public peace. Chidebere pleaded not guilty to all counts.

Prosecution and Defense Arguments

Following the plea, SSS counsel Mark Oruba moved for the defendant to be remanded, citing the interest of public security. The defense team opposed the application, noting their intention to file a formal bail application later in the week. However, Justice Abdulmalik ruled that Chidebere should remain in SSS custody pending further proceedings.

Adjournment and Trial Date

The court has adjourned the case until May 25 for the commencement of trial and the hearing of the bail application. The legal trouble stems from a social media post concerning military welfare.

Background of the Arrest

In a statement released on Saturday, May 2, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, confirmed that Justice Crack was arrested after sharing content featuring soldiers complaining about their feeding and living conditions. The Nigerian Army alleges that the influencer’s motives went beyond advocacy. According to Colonel Anele, a deeper investigation revealed that Chidebere’s interactions were an attempt to incite discontent and subvert the military system.

The case continues to draw significant attention online, highlighting the thin line between social activism and national security concerns.
