Daylight Cult Clash at Ilorin Central Market Claims One Life
At least one individual was killed on Friday, March 6, when suspected cultists engaged in a violent confrontation at the densely populated Ilorin Central Market, widely known as Oja Oba, in Kwara State. Witnesses reported that rival groups exchanged gunfire in a daylight battle within the bustling market, causing traders, motorists, and passersby to flee for safety.
Chaos and Panic Erupt in Busy Commercial Hub
The incident, which occurred just before noon, sparked widespread panic among petty traders who had set up their wares amid the heavy human and vehicular traffic typical of the market's commercial activities. The sound of gunshots near an area where military and police personnel were stationed to enforce market setback regulations intensified the fear, leading to immediate confusion as people scattered in various directions to avoid the crossfire.
Within moments, the previously vibrant market descended into chaos, with motorists and pedestrians heading toward Emir Road, Ita Ajia, and the Gambari axis quickly diverting their routes to escape the scene. Numerous traders were observed hastily packing their goods and running for cover, while others sought refuge inside nearby shops and enclosed stalls.
Police Response and Suspect Apprehension
Police operatives stationed at the market swiftly intervened, pursuing some of the fleeing suspects. During the operation, one suspect, dressed in a white native attire and carrying a small fashion bag around his neck, was apprehended by security forces. He was subsequently transported to the C Division Police Station at Oja Oba for further investigation.
The deceased has been identified as Ahmed Muse, who was reportedly the current leader of the Aye cult group in the area, according to the anti-cultism organization Naija Confra. Police officers later removed the body from the scene using a Hilux patrol vehicle.
Official Confirmation and Ongoing Investigation
The Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire Adeyemi, confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation into the clash has been initiated. She assured the public that those involved would be held accountable and brought to justice, emphasizing the commitment to maintaining security in the region.
