Customs and NDLEA Seize Billions in Drugs in Major Lagos and Kano Operations
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have executed significant drug interceptions in Lagos and Kano, seizing contraband worth billions of naira. This coordinated effort underscores a heightened crackdown on drug trafficking across Nigeria.
Massive Codeine Syrup Seizure at Apapa Port
In Lagos, the Apapa Area Command of the NCS, in collaboration with the NDLEA, intercepted two containers containing a total of 3,398 cartons of Codeine Syrup. The illicit drugs, valued at approximately N3.39 billion, were cleverly concealed within household utensils, including pearl-plated insulated casseroles and bullet insulated hotspots.
The seizures involved Container No. MRKU 3816476, which held 1,700 cartons (equivalent to 170,000 bottles) of CSP Codeine, and Container No. TGBU 5399178, containing 1,698 cartons (169,800 bottles) of the same substance. Both containers have been officially seized under the provisions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, as amended.
This operation follows closely on the heels of a previous display by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Dr. Bashir Adeniyi, who showcased 13 containers of hard drugs intercepted at the port and declared it a no-go area for smugglers.
Leadership Commends Collaborative Efforts
Emmanuel Oshoba, the Customs Area Controller for the Apapa Area Command, emphasized that this seizure demonstrates the command's unwavering commitment to the directives and vision of the Comptroller-General. He praised the seamless collaboration and unwavering support of NDLEA officers, which were pivotal to the success of the operation.
Oshoba reiterated the command's steadfast resolve to protect public health, safeguard national security, and facilitate only legitimate trade. This aligns with the renewed emphasis on technology-driven operations and a zero-tolerance policy towards smuggling.
Kano Command Disrupts Illicit Drug Supply
Simultaneously, the Kano Command of the NDLEA conducted a successful operation based on credible intelligence. In the Badawa area of the ancient city, operatives seized a large consignment of illicit drugs, including 75,000 capsules of Pregabalin, 556 bottles of Codeine, and quantities of loose Cannabis Sativa.
This seizure effectively disrupted what could have been a significant supply of illicit substances to drug markets across Kano State. The prime suspect remains at large but is under close surveillance, with ongoing efforts to secure his arrest and bring him to justice.
Public Cooperation Crucial in Anti-Drug Fight
The Kano Command, through its Public Relations Officer Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, commended members of the public for their continued cooperation. They urged residents to keep providing credible and actionable intelligence to support the fight against drug trafficking, highlighting the importance of community involvement in maintaining security.
These operations in Lagos and Kano reflect a robust and coordinated approach by Nigerian authorities to combat drug smuggling and protect societal well-being. The seizures not only prevent harmful substances from reaching the streets but also send a strong message to traffickers about the intensified enforcement measures in place.
