Customs Operatives Allegedly Shoot Driver Dead in Osun State Incident

A yet-to-be-identified driver was allegedly shot dead by operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service along the Osogbo–Iwo Road in Osun State. The tragic incident occurred at the Onibueja area in Ido-Osun near a police roadblock around 10 am on Sunday, March 15, 2026.

Details of the Shooting

The security operatives, said to be wearing mufti, were pursuing the deceased driver from the Iwo end of the road. A resident of Onibueja, who identified himself simply as Sunday, reported that the incident attracted many people to the scene. “The man was driving towards the Osogbo end from the Iwo end of the road when some security operatives in mufti shot at his vehicle,” he told Punch.

“He died right there behind the wheel. The car was riddled with bullets, and people rushed to the scene. The incident happened close to a police roadblock. But those who killed him were not wearing uniforms, so we cannot really say who they are. People were very angry over the development,” Sunday added.

Police Confirmation and Arrests

The spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident and stated that the suspected shooters were Customs operatives. “The incident happened, but those who allegedly fired the shots are Customs operatives. We have arrested two people in connection with the incident. I will brief the press fully in a few minutes,” Ojelabi said.

This event has raised serious concerns about the conduct of security personnel and the use of force in civilian areas. The involvement of Customs operatives in mufti has further complicated the situation, leading to public anger and demands for accountability.

Authorities are expected to provide more details as the investigation progresses, with hopes for justice and measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
