Customs Probing Officer Over N200,000 Bribe Demand Video

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has initiated disciplinary proceedings against an officer who was captured in a viral video allegedly demanding N200,000 from a motorist along the Lagos-Benin Expressway. The incident came to light on Friday after the video surfaced online.

Details of the Incident

The video, secretly recorded by the motorist using AI-Meta glasses, shows the officer questioning the driver about vehicle documents and alleged unpaid clearances dating back to 2018. According to the footage, the officer claimed that outstanding payments had accumulated over the years and instructed the motorist to report to the office to retrieve his vehicle key. When the driver inquired about resolving the matter, the officer allegedly responded, “Go and bring N200,000.”

Customs Service Response

Reacting to the incident, the Nigeria Customs Service stated that it had activated immediate disciplinary procedures in line with its zero-tolerance policy on misconduct. Speaking on behalf of the Comptroller, Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone A, Comptroller G. I. Aliu, CSC Hussaini Abdullahu said that officers found guilty of violating ethical standards would face appropriate sanctions without compromise.

Investigation Underway

The video posted on the NCS official X account showed that the officer involved had been handed over to the Head of the Customs Police Unit, Zone A, for further investigation and disciplinary action. The Customs Police Unit assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted into the matter. However, the identity of the officer has not been officially disclosed by the Service.
