DIG Orders Urgent Security Measures to Curb Aba Attacks

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) for the South-east zone, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, has directed immediate security measures to address the increasing incidents of violent attacks and armed robberies in Aba, Abia State. Onwuemelie gave the order on Tuesday during a visit to the police headquarters in Umuahia as part of a strategic assessment of commands, following directives from Inspector General of Police Rilwanu Disu.

Security Concerns in Aba

Onwuemelie noted that certain security issues require strategic attention, specifically violent attacks and armed robberies in Aba. He stated that while the reported incidents may be isolated, they must be swiftly addressed to prevent escalation. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that about two weeks ago, an armed gang attacked and robbed people at a shopping complex at the Okpulo Umuobo Junction near Aba. Sources told NAN that after robbing a pharmacy, the criminals shot the owner and dropped a shotgun while escaping.

Addressing Cultism and Youth Violence

Addressing disturbing developments in Umuahia and other parts of the state, the DIG said activities often labeled as cultism should more accurately be described as organized youth gang violence. He emphasized the need for intelligence-driven policing to dismantle such criminal networks and curb violence and intimidation. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration between the police and key stakeholders, including academic institutions, and expressed concern over emerging threats within university environments.

Onwuemelie said his visit aimed to strengthen operational efficiency, enhance leadership accountability, and ensure effective implementation of the policing vision of the current administration at all levels. He acknowledged the dedication of the command's personnel in ensuring safety across Abia and commended them for the relative calm in the state.

IGP's Commitment to Welfare and Modern Policing

The DIG affirmed the IGP's commitment to officers' welfare, assuring personnel of ongoing efforts regarding promotions, housing improvements, and pension reforms. He also addressed concerns about state policing, stating that personnel interests would always be protected. Onwuemelie announced that the Nigeria Police Force is set to adopt modern policing technologies, including the introduction of Artificial Intelligence into investigative processes, which will come with specialized training for officers across commands and formations.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Police in Abia, Danladi Isa, thanked the DIG for his visit and promised to ensure the command works in line with the IGP's directives to improve policing in the country.
