A 32-year-old dispatch rider, Emmanuel Jegede, has died after suspected hoodlums allegedly pushed him off his motorcycle for refusing to pay an extortion demand along the Ikotun-Idimu Road in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
Details of the incident
The incident occurred between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. Jegede had just completed a delivery and was heading to another destination when he encountered the suspects. According to reports, he had earlier been involved in a minor collision with a tricycle (keke) rider. Residents, including the suspected hoodlums, helped resolve the issue peacefully. However, the hoodlums subsequently demanded money from Jegede for their intervention. When he told them he had no money, he continued on his way to make a delivery.
After completing that delivery, as Jegede was heading to another location, the same hoodlums crossed to the opposite side of the road and waited for him. When he approached the Alhaja end of the road, they allegedly pushed him while he was still in motion. Jegede lost control of his bike, swerved, and crashed into a concrete median. He sustained severe head injuries and died at the scene. Witnesses said the hoodlums fled immediately when they saw he was unconscious.
Police response and investigation
Police officers from the Idimu Police Division arrived at the scene and evacuated the corpse to a mortuary. The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Superintendent Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident. She stated, 'The police are investigating the incident and working to obtain CCTV footage from the area to determine what exactly happened.' Adebisi urged residents with useful information to come forward.
The killing has sparked outrage among dispatch riders and residents in the Alimosho area, where extortion by hoodlums is reportedly common. Many are calling for increased police patrols and surveillance to prevent similar tragedies.
