Top Doctor Found Guilty of Attempted Manslaughter in Hawaii Cliffside Attack on Wife
A prominent anesthesiologist has been convicted of attempted manslaughter after a violent incident where he attempted to push his wife off a cliff in Hawaii while assaulting her with a rock. The verdict was delivered on Wednesday, April 8, following a three-week trial that revealed disturbing details about the couple's marital strife.
Details of the Conviction and Trial
Gerhardt Konig, 47, was found guilty by a jury at the Oahu First Circuit Court for his actions on March 24, 2025, during a hike on the Pali Puka Trail in Oahu. The jury, after two days of deliberation, convicted him on a lesser charge based on mental or emotional disturbance, rather than the original second-degree attempted murder charge he had pleaded not guilty to. As the verdict was read, Konig appeared visibly distressed, bowing his head as he faced a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
The Attack and Prosecution's Case
Prosecutors argued that Konig pushed his wife, Arielle Konig, 37, a nuclear engineer, near the edge of the cliff and repeatedly beat her with a rock on her birthday. They claimed he had devised a plan to kill her to avoid a divorce, motivated in part by a $250,000 life insurance policy that would benefit him upon her death. During the trial, Arielle testified that she screamed for help, with the attack only ending when two female hikers heard her pleas and called 911. She suffered severe scalp lacerations, with a physician from Queen's Medical Center describing crushed tissue down to the skull.
Defense Arguments and Marital Context
Konig's defense team countered that Arielle attacked first, framing the incident as a 'he said, she said' scenario. They noted that police never found a syringe at the scene, despite Arielle's claim that Konig had one. However, the court was shown photographs from his medical bag containing a syringe and Propofol, a powerful anesthetic. Konig admitted to striking his wife with a rock but denied having syringes or attempting to push her off the cliff. He expressed remorse, stating, 'I felt horrified about what I did to her... I had resorted to violence against my wife, the person whom I love the most in the world.'
Background and Aftermath
The couple's marriage had been strained after Gerhardt discovered 'flirty messages' between Arielle and a coworker, which she described as a three-month 'emotional affair.' Arielle had been trying to repair the relationship, but the incident led her to file for divorce in May 2025, seeking full custody of their young sons. Konig has been in jail since his arrest eight hours after the attack, and his medical staff privileges at Maui Health were revoked. The couple met on a dating app in 2016 and married in 2018. His sentencing is scheduled for August 13.
