Doctor Sentenced to Six Years for Secretly Filming and Abusing Male Patients

A sexual health doctor who exploited his position to prey on male patients has been jailed for six years after being found guilty of multiple sexual offences, including secretly filming intimate examinations. Dr Timothy Girling, 55, worked at a medical centre in Bournemouth, Dorset, where he carried out what prosecutors described as a 'deeply calculated' series of abuses under the guise of legitimate medical practice.

Details of the Offences and Investigation

The case came to light in August 2023 when a male patient reported Girling to Dorset Police after hearing his iPhone start recording during an examination and noticing the device poking out of his pocket. The victim seized the phone, prompting Girling to flee the building. During the investigation, police identified two additional patients who had been sexually assaulted, with one also recorded without consent. Examination of Girling's devices revealed further recordings, 600 images of penises or tight clothing, and indecent images of children. He had also set up a camera to film men using a bathroom.

Prosecutor Rebecca Austin stated that Girling used 'the guise of medical necessity to gain sexual gratification,' manipulating vulnerable individuals who trusted him as a professional. One victim recounted leaving the clinic in tears, saying, 'I was a very, very vulnerable person back then, I was in a really dark place.' The court heard that Girling's intimate physical examinations went 'far beyond what was clinically required,' with patients believing the inappropriate touching was part of standard medical procedures.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

A jury convicted Girling of three counts of sexual assault, six charges of voyeurism, and one of attempted voyeurism. He also pleaded guilty to three charges of making indecent images of children. During the trial, it was revealed that Girling had been diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder, which his defence claimed led to a 'special area of interest' in penises. However, Judge Jonathan Fuller KC dismissed this as a cause for the offending, stating, 'Your interest was a sexual one and that sexual activity was of your own choosing. The reality is you used your position to satisfy your particular sexual interests. This was a gross betrayal of your patients' trust.'

The judge noted that Girling had continued offending despite being suspended and reinstated following an earlier complaint, and he also referenced 'weird' behaviour, such as photographing men urinating in alleyways, which was not part of the charges. Sentencing Girling to six years in prison, Judge Fuller emphasized the severity of the betrayal, saying, 'Being a doctor is a significant thing in a person's life and no doubt there must be many you have helped, but on another darker side, there are those you have abused.'

Statements from Authorities

Detective Constable Kit Little of Dorset Police praised the victims for their courage, stating, 'We have worked tirelessly since the initial report was first made in August 2023 to investigate Girling's offending, identify further victims where possible, and bring him to justice. This would not have been possible without the strength and courage of the victims, who supported our investigation and the court process.'

Lucy Paddick of the Crown Prosecution Service added, 'A doctor's duty is to care for patients, not exploit them, and Timothy Girling repeatedly violated that fundamental trust. These sexual offences, carried out under the guise of legitimate medical practice, were deeply calculated. He manipulated vulnerable individuals and exploited them in clinical settings - a place where they should feel safe and secure. We hope these convictions demonstrate that such abuse of authority will be robustly prosecuted.'
