Ebonyi Journalist Survives Brutal Assault, Accuses Local Government Chairman
In a harrowing incident that has sparked outrage, Benjamin Nworie, the former Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Ebonyi State Council, narrowly escaped death after being violently attacked at his residence in Ugwuechara, Abakaliki. The alleged assault occurred in the early hours of the day, with Nworie claiming it was orchestrated by thugs acting on the orders of Mrs Peace Agwu, the Chairman of Ishielu Local Council.
Details of the Alleged Attack
According to a statement released by Nworie, three assailants stormed his home and confronted him over the removal of bamboo materials placed near his entrance gate. He described the encounter as brutal and life-threatening, stating, "They forcefully dragged, beat and punched me many times on the face and mouth." The attackers reportedly threatened to kill him and his family before neighbors intervened to prevent further harm.
Nworie explained that the conflict originated from his decision to remove the bamboo, which he said had posed a safety hazard. "I removed the bamboo because it was on the entrance to my house, which nearly caused an accident about three days ago," he lamented, adding that ongoing construction in the area had made access to his property increasingly difficult over time.
Council Chairman's Firm Denial
In response, Mrs Peace Agwu has categorically denied any involvement in the incident. Through a statement signed by her Special Assistant, Jerry Odi, she labeled the allegations as false, malicious, and defamatory. "For the avoidance of doubt, Mrs Agwu had no involvement whatsoever, directly or indirectly, in the incident described by Nworie," the statement asserted.
The council boss dismissed suggestions linking her to acts of violence, emphasizing that she does not sponsor or operate any group of thugs. The statement warned, "It is, therefore, reckless and legally indefensible for Nworie to publicly accuse the chairman of orchestrating violence without presenting any credible evidence." Consequently, Agwu demanded an immediate retraction and public apology from Nworie, threatening legal action if these conditions are not met.

The office of the chairman has welcomed a full investigation by relevant security agencies, expressing confidence that such a probe would clear her name. "Agwu remains committed to peace, lawful conduct, and responsible leadership," the statement added. Meanwhile, the development has drawn attention from various stakeholders, who are urging restraint, proper verification of facts, and a thorough investigation to uncover the truth behind the incident.
