Ebonyi Police Recover Body of Abducted Traditional Ruler and Father of Former Deputy Governor
In a tragic development, the Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of the body of Ezeogo Francis Igwe, the traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike in Ikwo Local Government Area. The victim, who is also the father of a former deputy governor of the state, was kidnapped under violent circumstances and later killed by his abductors despite ongoing ransom negotiations.
Details of the Kidnapping Incident
The incident occurred on Sunday, March 1, 2026, when gunmen ambushed Ezeogo Igwe as he was leaving church. According to police reports, the assailants, who were all masked, double-crossed his vehicle and forcibly took him away on a motorcycle. The kidnappers subsequently contacted his family, demanding a hefty ransom of N250 million for his safe release.
Unfortunately, during the negotiation process, the kidnappers executed the traditional ruler at their camp on March 2, 2026. This brutal act has sent shockwaves through the community and highlighted the escalating security challenges in the region.
Police Rescue Operation and Arrests
In response to the kidnapping, operatives of the Ebonyi State Police Command launched an intensive rescue operation. The police spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, detailed the efforts in an official statement. Through the deployment of technical and intelligence assets, officers were able to arrest two initial suspects identified as members of the kidnapping syndicate.
During interrogation, these suspects confessed that the monarch had been killed and offered to lead police to the hideout to recover his remains. However, as the operatives approached the location, other gang members opened fire, prompting a fierce confrontation.
The police responded with superior firepower, which overwhelmed the criminal elements. In the ensuing exchange, one of the hoodlums was neutralized, while others fled the scene. The operation resulted in the arrest of seven additional suspects, bringing the total to nine individuals in custody. Authorities also recovered one locally made pistol from the suspects.
Recovery of the Body and Ongoing Investigations
The remains of the late traditional ruler were successfully recovered from the hideout and have been deposited at a morgue for autopsy procedures. SP Ukandu emphasized that the suspects are currently in police custody, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing members of the gang.
He assured the public that upon the conclusion of investigations, all arrested individuals will be charged to court. This case underscores the persistent threat of kidnapping in the area and the determined efforts of law enforcement to combat such crimes.
The recovery operation, while resulting in the tragic confirmation of the ruler's death, demonstrates the police's commitment to addressing security breaches and bringing perpetrators to justice. The community mourns the loss of a respected leader, and authorities continue to work towards enhancing safety measures to prevent future incidents.
