The Nzuko Edda, Abakaliki Branch, has called for a thorough investigation and full prosecution of all suspects implicated in the brutal killing and beheading of four indigenes of Okporojo community, allegedly carried out during an attack by persons from the neighbouring Amasiri community. The group made the demand on Tuesday following a meeting in Abakaliki, where it rejected calls for clemency and the unconditional release of individuals currently standing trial over the incident.
Rejection of Clemency Calls
In a communiqué signed by its Chairman, Chief David Nkama, and Secretary, Chief Stanley Ngwu, the association insisted that any attempt to grant clemency before the conclusion of judicial proceedings would undermine efforts to achieve justice, peace and reconciliation in the state. The group was reacting to a communiqué reportedly issued by stakeholders and political leaders of Amasiri Clan after a meeting held on May 6, 2026, at De Baze Hotel, Amasiri, as well as comments allegedly published on a Facebook platform known as Amasiri Odyssey, which called for clemency for the defendants.
Concerns Over Politicisation
Nzuko Edda expressed concern over what it described as attempts to politicise the matter by demanding the unconditional release of the accused persons while the case remains before the courts. According to the group, such calls are insensitive to the pain and suffering of the victims’ families and risk eroding public confidence in the judicial process. The association further alleged that no meaningful reconciliation efforts had been initiated by the Amasiri community since the incident. It warned that any pressure on the government to grant clemency before the completion of legal proceedings could heighten tensions and undermine efforts to secure lasting peace.
“Justice cannot be sacrificed on the altar of political pressure, clannish sentiments or emotional appeals. Sustainable peace can only be achieved where truth, accountability and responsibility prevail,” the communiqué stated. The group maintained that all persons indicted in connection with the killings should be allowed to face the full weight of the law without interference, intimidation or political influence.
Commendation for Governor
It also commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for what it described as his prompt and statesmanlike handling of the crisis, particularly the arraignment and prosecution of 33 suspects allegedly linked to the killings following police investigations. According to the association, the governor’s actions have helped restore public confidence in the justice system and reinforced the principle that no individual or group is above the law.
Appeal for Justice
Nzuko Edda urged the state government to remain committed to justice, fairness and accountability, stressing that genuine reconciliation can only be built on truth, remorse and respect for the rule of law. The group specifically appealed to Governor Nwifuru not to yield to pressure for the release of the suspects before the conclusion of their trial, expressing confidence that the courts would ensure justice is served. It noted that despite the enormous losses suffered by the people of Okporojo and the wider Edda community, residents had remained peaceful and law-abiding because of their confidence in the government’s commitment to justice.
The association added that lasting peace and security in Ebonyi State can only be guaranteed when perpetrators of criminal acts are held accountable and innocent citizens are assured protection and equal access to justice. The group recalled that on January 29, 2026, an attack allegedly linked to the Amasiri community resulted in the gruesome killing of four Okporojo indigenes, including the beheading of three victims, while several others were reportedly abducted. The attack also led to the destruction of about 29 houses and other valuable property, leaving many families displaced and traumatised. Describing the incident as one of the most tragic in recent times, Nzuko Edda said the killings sent shockwaves across Ebonyi State and underscored the urgent need for justice, accountability and lasting peace.
