Suspect Confesses to Renting Firearms from Community Security Chief
Marvellous Isaac, a 32-year-old kidnapping suspect arrested in Edo State, has confessed that his gang rented the weapons used in the abduction of a woman from the Vegetable Market in Benin City from a community security chief. Isaac, originally from Akwa Ibom State but residing on Ekenwa Road in Benin City, was apprehended following the June 14 incident. In a video interrogation released by authorities and obtained by SaharaReporters, Isaac claimed the firearms were sourced through a Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Oredo Community, identified as Liberty. He stated that a fellow gang member, Precious, who was later killed in a police confrontation, facilitated access to the weapons.
Details of the ₦8 Million Abduction
The gang reportedly received ₦8 million as ransom from the victim's family, with Liberty personally receiving ₦1.5 million. Isaac described the gang as a four-man unit, including himself, Precious, another suspect named Wisdom, and a fourth member recruited from Delta State. He alleged that the CSO possessed multiple firearms, which were made available to different users. The abduction occurred during a brazen daytime operation at the busy Vegetable Market. The attackers arrived in an RX 350 Lexus SUV, targeted a parked vehicle, shot at its tyre to immobilise it, and dragged out a male occupant. While attempting to force both the man and a female companion into their getaway vehicle, the man escaped in the chaos. The woman initially fled but was chased down, recaptured, and taken away.
Police Recovery and Arrests
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the arrests following intelligence-led operations by the Intelligence Response Team. Recoveries included ₦2.25 million in cash, the Lexus RX 350 SUV used in the operation, a pump-action shotgun, two live cartridges, an additional ₦2.25 million believed to be crime proceeds, and a motorcycle. Police also confirmed that suspect Precious died during a gun duel with operatives. Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika stated that the arrests were made after credible intelligence linked the suspects to the abduction.
Government Response and Anti-Kidnapping Measures
Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo praised security agencies for the swift operation and reiterated his administration's commitment to tackling kidnapping and violent crime. He restated plans to establish a special court dedicated to kidnapping and cult-related offences, aimed at speeding up prosecution and strengthening penalties for convicted offenders. Governor Okpebholo has also pledged to sign death warrants for convicted kidnappers and push for public execution as a deterrent.
