Edo Police Command Vows to Prosecute Man Over False Kidnap Allegations

The Edo State Police Command has announced its firm intention to prosecute 52-year-old Oseghale Okoershim for allegedly making false and malicious accusations against the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Ugboha Division. This decision follows a viral video in which Okoershim claimed the DPO was involved in kidnapping activities, sparking public concern and potential unrest.

Details of the False Allegations

In the viral video, Okoershim alleged that the DPO collaborated with kidnappers who were disguised as hunters to abduct residents of Ugboha and neighboring communities. These claims emerged after the arrest of several individuals in a forest located between Ugboha and Amedokhian. However, police investigations have revealed a different story, contradicting Okoershim's assertions.

Police Clarification and Evidence

Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem provided a detailed account, stating that the apprehended individuals—Shaibu Haruna, Nura Bada, and Inua Husseini—are registered hunters with the Nigeria Hunters Association. They had formally informed the Ugboha Division of their hunting activities before entering the bush on January 30, 2026. Ikoedem emphasized that these suspects were legitimate hunters, not kidnappers, and described Okoershim's allegations as entirely false and malicious.

During the encounter that led to the viral recording, Shaibu Haruna and his colleagues, who only understand the Hausa language, attempted to explain their legitimate status. Shaibu reportedly presented his identity card as a registered hunter, but those confronting him refused to examine it. He also tried to show the DPO's phone number, which he had collected upon reporting at the Division days earlier, but this was similarly disregarded.

Community Testimonies and Confession

Several members of the Amedokhian community testified that they have known Shaibu Haruna for years as a legitimate hunter whom they have patronized on multiple occasions. This community support further undermines Okoershim's claims. During interrogation, Okoershim made a confessional statement, admitting that he recorded and shared the video. The police command noted that the content was misleading, defamatory, and capable of causing public panic.

Police Warning and Ongoing Investigations

The Edo State Police Command assures the public that anyone found culpable at the conclusion of investigations will be arraigned before the court in accordance with the law. Members of the public are strongly advised to verify information through appropriate authorities and refrain from spreading unverified content that could incite panic, ethnic tension, or unrest. Investigations into this matter are currently ongoing to ensure justice is served.
