Edo Seals Apartments for Cult Initiations, Arrests 12

The Edo State Special Security Squad has arrested 12 suspected cultists and sealed two apartments allegedly used for cult initiations in Benin City. The operation was led by the Chief Security Officer and Principal Security Officer to Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Operation Details

The raids targeted several hotspots across Benin City, following the killing of a young man near the University of Benin gate on Sunday, May 10, 2026.

Spokesperson Noah Idemudia clarified that the 12 suspects were not linked to the UNIBEN killing but were identified as cult members after symbols and incriminating materials were found on them.

Warning to Community Leaders

Idemudia accused some Okaigheles (youth leaders) of aiding violent crimes, noting that intelligence reports suggest sophisticated weapons used in attacks are traced to communities. He warned: “Reports indicate that some Okaigheles are harbouring criminals. The governor warns them to maintain peace and ensure no unlicensed weapons are found in their possession, as they will be treated as criminals.”

The suspects have been handed over to the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Nigeria Police Force, Edo State Command, for profiling and investigation.

Sealed Properties

One apartment at Ogba-Evbuodia was allegedly used for cult initiation activities. Operatives were attacked while attempting arrests, leading to the sealing of the property and invitation of the owner for questioning.

Another apartment at Evbuomore Quarters contained shrines and fetish items across several rooms, suspected to be used for initiation into different confraternities. The owner has also been invited for questioning.

Idemudia added: “The governor has warned those sponsoring cultism and violent killings to desist immediately. Anyone aiding criminality will face the full weight of the law.”

He also warned against unlawful gatherings, alleging that some cult groups were planning anniversary celebrations.
