Ex-convict nabbed for stabbing Okada rider in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command has apprehended a 25-year-old former convict, identified as Ahmed, following a violent and failed attempt to steal a commercial motorcycle, commonly known as an Okada.

Violent Attack on a Quiet Road

According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Olushola Olayinka Ayanlade, the incident occurred when the suspect and an accomplice, now at large, hired the motorcyclist. They requested a ride to a specific destination. Upon reaching a secluded area, the duo launched their attack.

The arrested suspect, Ahmed, stabbed the rider multiple times with a knife while his partner, Gbenga, held a screwdriver. The violent assault was intended to overpower the rider and steal his motorcycle.

Community Intervention and Arrest

The victim's desperate cries for help pierced the night, alerting residents in the vicinity. People rushed to the scene, forcing the criminals to abort their mission. Gbenga attempted to escape with the bike but abandoned it as sympathizers closed in, fleeing on foot.

Ahmed tried to hide under nearby cassava plants. However, the bleeding victim saw where he hid and informed the community members, leading directly to his capture. The injured rider was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment.

Confession and Criminal Background

During interrogation, Ahmed confessed to the crime. He revealed that the plan was to steal the motorcycle and sell it in Osogbo, Osun State. He admitted this was his first time participating in such a robbery, though his accomplice, Gbenga, was experienced.

The suspect also disclosed a troubling personal history. Ahmed is a previously convicted criminal, having served an eight-month prison sentence for stealing logs. Furthermore, he confessed to being a drug addict, detailing a dangerous mix of marijuana, substances known as 'Eric Moore' and 'Jedi', and strong alcoholic drinks which he claimed energized him.

Despite claiming to have stabbed the victim only three times, medical treatment revealed the rider sustained stab wounds in seven different places. Ahmed has since appealed to the government for mercy.

The Police Public Relations Officer confirmed that the suspect will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation. Manhunt efforts are actively ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect, Gbenga.
