Chaos erupted in the Panseke area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, when a former prison inmate launched a violent attack on police officers, leaving one with a serious forehead injury from a knife wound.
Violent Confrontation Over Alleged Affair
The dramatic incident occurred in the early hours of last Friday when the ex-convict arrived in Panseke on a motorcycle. Eyewitnesses reported that the man immediately approached police officers stationed near an armored vehicle and attempted to seize an AK-47 rifle from one of them.
According to sources, the attacker specifically targeted the officer he accused of having an affair with his wife and allegedly being responsible for his previous imprisonment. The suspect reportedly intended to use the confiscated weapon to shoot the officer he blamed for his marital problems and jail time.
Knife Attack After Failed Gun Grab
When the ex-convict realized he couldn't successfully take the rifle from the trained officer, a physical struggle broke out. Seeing that he was being overpowered in the scuffle, the man dramatically changed tactics.
The assailant pulled a knife from his trousers and stabbed the police officer he had accused of the affair directly in the forehead. The sudden escalation of violence shocked bystanders and created panic in the area.
"What really happened is that he came with his Okada and went to meet those police officers close to the armored vehicle and started dragging a gun with one of them, hoping to collect the gun and kill the other person," explained an eyewitness.
Suspect Apprehended and Restrained
The commotion quickly drew the attention of other police officers assigned to the armored vehicle at Panseke. They rushed to their colleague's aid and managed to subdue the attacker after a brief struggle.
The police response team tied both the suspect's hands and legs before taking him away from the scene for further processing. The injured officer received immediate medical attention for his forehead wound.
"Later, other policemen came to join those he was fighting, and they tied both his hands and legs before carrying him away," confirmed another witness to the Friday morning incident.
Previous Criminal History Revealed
This is not the first time the suspect, identified as Adelani Oriyomi, has encountered law enforcement. Records show that in January 2025, the 54-year-old ex-convict was arrested by the Ogun State Social Orientation and Safety Corps, popularly known as 'So Safe.'
Oriyomi was apprehended in the Kere area of Obada-Oko, Abeokuta, for allegedly attempting to exhume a human skull from a grave. Commander of the Corps, Soji Ganzallo, confirmed the arrest through a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Assistant Commander Moruf Yusuf.
According to the January incident report, "The suspect, Oriyomi, was spotted trying to hide before he was caught by the men of the corps. Once the coast seemed clear, he resumed digging the tomb to allegedly retrieve a human skull."
Oriyomi reportedly confessed to the grave desecration offense and admitted that he had previously exhumed a skull behind his residence on January 18, 2025. The suspect revealed that he had served over six years at the Oba Correctional Center for a similar crime before his release.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about repeat offenders and the vigilance efforts by security corps to prevent criminal activities in Ogun State. Oriyomi has been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation regarding both the grave desecration and the recent attack on police officers.
