Jorge 'Garda' Sánchez, a 56-year-old former regional footballer, has been arrested on suspicion of killing his own mother, Delia Mercedes Romero de Sánchez, 86, at her home in Quequén, Argentina. Her body was discovered on Friday afternoon, June 19, with at least one serious head injury. A post-mortem examination will determine the exact cause of death.
Circumstances of the Incident
Investigators are working on the preliminary assumption that the attack occurred around 3 p.m. that day. When authorities arrived at the home, they found Sánchez in a visibly intoxicated state, reportedly after ingesting pills. He was taken to hospital for treatment, where blood samples were taken for toxicology analysis. After being discharged, he was formally charged with aggravated homicide. He has so far refused to give a statement.
Family Reaction and Background
Sánchez previously played for Estación Quequén and Villa Mitre de Bahía Blanca during the 1990s. His brother, Luis 'Paco' Sánchez, also a regional footballer, expressed shock on social media: 'This is an unimaginably difficult moment in life. I will remember my mum for who she was – the best mother I could have had. Together with old Paco, they were incredible parents. I love you, mum… you will always live in my heart.'
Current Status
Jorge Sánchez remains in custody as investigators work to establish his mental and physical state at the time of the alleged crime. The case has shocked the local community in Quequén, where the family is well-known.
