The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken steps to bolster security enforcement and judicial coordination across the nation's airports. FAAN warned that offenses committed within airport facilities pose serious risks to passenger confidence and national security.
High-Level Stakeholders Engagement
At a high-level stakeholders' engagement on airport security and prosecution processes, FAAN emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among security agencies, prosecutors, legal practitioners, and other stakeholders to improve arrest procedures, prosecution, and judicial administration within the aviation sector.
The engagement, themed 'Strengthening Arrest, Prosecution and Judicial Administration Within the Airport Environment,' brought together legal professionals, security agencies, prosecutors, and aviation stakeholders to deliberate on strategies aimed at enhancing justice administration and regulatory enforcement at airports nationwide.
FAAN's Commitment to Safety
Representing the Managing Director of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, the Director of Aviation Security Services, Afegbai Igbafe, stated that effective law enforcement and inter-agency collaboration remain critical to safeguarding airport infrastructure and sustaining public confidence in Nigeria's aviation industry.
According to him, the airport environment must continually reflect order, safety, discipline, and strict compliance with aviation regulations. He noted that criminal offenses within airport facilities should never be treated lightly because of their potential implications for security and public trust.
Kuku said FAAN remains fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of passengers, airport workers, and other users, adding that this objective can only be achieved through stronger synergy among Aviation Security (AVSEC), the Nigeria Police, prosecutors, and other relevant agencies operating within the aviation ecosystem. She also emphasized the need to strengthen enforcement mechanisms within airports to ensure compliance with aviation laws, safety standards, and security regulations.
Legal Services Perspective
In her remarks, the Director of Legal Services, FAAN, Bridget Gold, described the engagement as timely, particularly in addressing practical legal and operational issues affecting airport administration. She explained that the forum was designed to deepen stakeholders' understanding of judicial administration processes within the airport environment, while clarifying the roles of security agencies, prosecutors, legal practitioners, and other institutions involved in the administration of justice.
According to her, the engagement would further improve cooperation, coordination, and mutual understanding among agencies responsible for maintaining law, order, and security at Nigerian airports.
Technical Sessions
The event also featured technical presentations and interactive sessions by legal experts, prosecutors, and security agencies on improving arrest procedures, prosecution processes, and judicial coordination within the aviation sector.
