Police Arrest Fake Soldier and Six Others Amidst Jos Crisis
Operatives of the Plateau State Police Command have apprehended a fake soldier and six other individuals during the ongoing crisis in Jos, the state capital. The arrests were made as part of intensified security efforts to restore order and prevent further violence in the troubled region.
Details of the Arrests
The suspect, who was dressed in an army singlet and an extra shirt, was arrested at Angwan Rukuba, a community that recently witnessed a tragic Palm Sunday night attack resulting in 28 fatalities and 22 injuries. According to police reports, the fake soldier was roaming suspiciously in the area on Wednesday afternoon, April 1, and was found in possession of a counterfeit Nigerian Military School (NMS) identity card.
Police spokesperson Alabo Alfred confirmed the development in an official statement, noting that the suspect was immediately taken to the police headquarters in Jos. There, he was paraded by the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, as part of efforts to demonstrate law enforcement's commitment to tackling impersonation and criminal activities during the crisis.
Additional Arrests and Criminal Exploitation
In addition to the fake soldier, five other individuals were arrested earlier in the day in connection with unrest across the Jos metropolis. Alfred described these suspects as hoodlums who exploited the tense situation to perpetrate criminal acts, such as snatching bags and money from unsuspecting members of the public, particularly around the Terminus area.
"They are essentially thieves who took advantage of the tension to commit crimes," Alfred stated, emphasizing that these arrests highlight the opportunistic nature of some criminal elements during periods of instability.
Security Response and Measures
Security operatives were swiftly mobilized when the situation began to escalate, successfully dispersing the hoodlums and restoring calm to affected areas. The police spokesperson noted that security presence has since been reinforced around key locations, including university environments and other strategic areas, to ensure the protection of lives and property.
Alfred urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, calling on the public to promptly report any suspicious movements or activities to security agencies. This appeal underscores the importance of community cooperation in maintaining safety during such crises.
Context of the Jos Crisis
The arrests occur against the backdrop of heightened tensions in Jos, which has experienced sporadic violence and security challenges. The recent Palm Sunday attack in Angwan Rukuba has exacerbated fears, making these arrests a critical step in addressing both impersonation and opportunistic crime. The Plateau State Police Command continues to monitor the situation closely, with ongoing investigations into the activities of those arrested.
