Minnesota Father Faces Manslaughter Charges in Tragic Infant Death
A Minnesota father has been arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter following the tragic death of his 10-month-old son, who suffocated under weighted blankets while the father was distracted by online activities for nearly five hours.
Fatal Neglect During Online Chat Session
Omni Maxx Morningstar, 26, was taken into custody on Monday, April 6, after authorities determined his infant son Remington died from asphyxia caused by compression from weighted blankets in their Mankato home. According to police reports and court documents obtained by the Minnesota Star Tribune, the incident occurred on October 1, 2025, when Morningstar placed his son down for a nap at approximately 11 a.m.
The father allegedly retreated to a separate bedroom where he wore headphones and engaged in extended conversations on Discord, a popular online communication platform. During this period, he failed to check on his sleeping child for nearly five hours despite the infant's documented history of medical issues including fevers and colic.
Discovery and Failed Rescue Efforts
Morningstar finally discovered his son unresponsive and severely overheated around 3:55 p.m., with the child's body temperature having risen to a dangerous 104.7 degrees Fahrenheit. He immediately alerted emergency services, but despite life-saving attempts by first responders, the infant was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
"I'm thinking in my head, like five hours, huh," Morningstar reportedly told investigators during questioning about the fatal incident. "I really do wish I would have checked on him."
Pattern of Concerning Behavior
Police investigation revealed the infant's bed was covered with multiple weighted blankets totaling nearly 20 pounds. Morningstar admitted to authorities that he had begun using heavy blankets months earlier in an attempt to prevent the child from crying and moving his legs during sleep.
Further disturbing details emerged from court documents indicating this was not an isolated incident of neglect. The child's mother reported that approximately one month prior to the fatal event, Morningstar had left their infant alone while completely covered with a king-sized blanket. He reportedly admitted to forgetting about the baby while engrossed in video gaming during that previous incident.
Legal Proceedings and Medical Findings
A medical examiner confirmed the infant likely died from asphyxia caused by compression from the weighted blankets. Morningstar now faces second-degree manslaughter charges for his alleged negligence leading to his son's preventable death.
The defendant remains in custody at Blue Earth County Jail with a scheduled court appearance set for April 16. This tragic case has drawn attention to the dangers of weighted blankets for infants and the serious consequences of parental neglect during digital distractions.
