Father Found Guilty of Murdering Five-Week-Old Daughter After Inflicting Catastrophic Injuries
In a deeply disturbing case of child abuse, a father has been convicted of murdering his five-week-old daughter, Darcy-Leigh, after subjecting her to a horrifying campaign of violence that included 47 rib fractures and fatal head injuries. The verdict was delivered at Stafford Crown Court on Monday, March 16, 2026, following an eight-week trial that exposed the brutal details of the infant's short life.
Details of the Abuse and Investigation
Sean Jefferson, 35, of Walsall, was found guilty of murder, causing or allowing the death of a child, and two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent. The investigation revealed that Darcy-Leigh sustained the catastrophic head injury that led to her death, along with multiple other injuries inflicted over her brief five weeks of life. Police were alerted by paramedics on Mother's Day 2022 after the baby was found collapsed at her home in Burntwood, with both Jefferson and her mother, Amy Leigh Clark, 34, of Lichfield, arrested the following day. Tragically, Darcy-Leigh died in hospital days later.
A police spokesperson emphasized that this was not an isolated incident, stating, "Throughout the five weeks of her short life, she was physically assaulted on a repeated basis. By the time she died, she sustained 47 rib fractures, and both her legs were fractured. These fractures occurred on at least three separate occasions. These were not the only injuries cruelly inflicted on Darcy."
Verdicts and Sentencing
Amy Leigh Clark was found guilty of allowing the death of a child, with murder charges against her dropped. Both Jefferson and Clark are due to be sentenced at Stafford Crown Court later this year. DCI Ian Fitzgerald commented on the case, saying, "Today's verdict concludes a profoundly distressing case involving the murder of five-week-old Darcy. Her short life and tragic death must not be forgotten. Darcy was violently abused and murdered by her father. Her mother allowed her death. These were the people who should have loved and cared for her. It was despicable behaviour against a defenceless child."
He also acknowledged the efforts of the investigation team, prosecutors, and barristers, highlighting the professionalism and dedication involved in bringing this case to justice. The thoughts of the team remain with Darcy-Leigh's elder sibling, who has faced an unimaginable loss and a lengthy judicial process.
