Police arrest father and son with four firearms in Bayelsa

The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a father and his son for unlawful possession of four single-barrel guns. The suspects were intercepted during a routine stop and search operation along the Igbogene–Tombia Expressway in Yenagoa.

According to a statement by the command's spokesman, DSP Musa Mohammed, on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, the suspects were identified as Tibi Friday, 68, and his son Oyabrade Tibi, 36. They were travelling to Rivers State when the search uncovered the weapons.

Details of the arrest

On July 6, 2026, at about 10:30 hours, operatives from the Anti-Vice Unit stopped a tricycle carrying the two suspects. During the search, four single-barrel guns were found concealed inside a sack and covered with sticks in an attempt to evade detection.

The statement read: “The Bayelsa State Police Command under the leadership of CP. Iyamah Daniel Edebor, psc, IICFIP, foosi, has recorded another significant operational breakthrough with the arrest of two suspects in possession of four (4) single-barrel guns.”

Investigation transferred to SCID

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Yenagoa for further investigation. Authorities aim to trace the source of the firearms and identify any other individuals connected to the offence.

The command reiterated its commitment to combating the proliferation of illegal firearms and other violent crimes across the state. “The Command urges members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to support the Police with credible and timely information that will aid ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and security,” the statement added.
