FCC Warns Against Recruitment Scams
The Federal Character Commission (FCC) has issued a public advisory outlining five key measures for Nigerians to avoid recruitment scams when seeking federal government jobs. The warning, published on the commission’s official website on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, comes amidst a surge in fraudulent schemes targeting job seekers. The FCC, led by Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, emphasized that genuine recruitment processes are transparent and do not require payment to individuals.
How Recruitment Fraud Works
Scammers exploit the excitement around government job announcements by creating fake portals, impersonating officials, and demanding money for guaranteed placements. According to the FCC, fraudsters often circulate messages on social media and private chats claiming to have insider access or limited slots. They use pressure tactics such as “pay now to secure your slot” to extract money before victims realize the opportunity is fake. Fake websites designed to mimic official government platforms are also common tools for collecting personal data or payments. The commission stressed that legitimate recruitment never requires fees to any individual.
The FCC does not recruit workers itself but maintains a verified vacancy platform at fcc.gov.ng. Its constitutional mandate under Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution ensures fairness and diversity in federal appointments, but it does not process applications or make hiring decisions. Job seekers are advised to rely only on official channels and to verify any opportunity through the commission’s website.
Five Safety Measures Against Recruitment Scams
The FCC listed the following preventive measures for job seekers:
- Legitimate recruitment processes do not operate through unofficial payments to individuals.
- Information shared through unknown links, private messages, or unofficial groups should be treated with caution.
- Government recruitment opportunities are accessed through transparent processes, not personal arrangements.
- Applicants should understand that legitimate recruitment follows official procedures and cannot be guaranteed by individuals.
- Taking time to verify information can prevent disappointment, financial loss, and exposure to fraudulent activities.
The commission urged applicants to visit fcc.gov.ng directly for verified vacancy announcements and to follow only the application instructions issued by the recruiting institution.
Previous Warnings on Job Application Mistakes
Earlier in July 2026, the FCC also warned about seven common mistakes that hinder job seekers from securing legitimate government positions. These included relying on unofficial sources, such as fake websites or forwarded messages, which can lead to fraud. The commission reiterated that genuine recruitment processes are transparent and should not involve payments.
