FG Arraigns 3 Suspects Over Oyo Schoolchildren Abduction

The federal government on Friday, July 17, 2026, arraigned three men before the Federal High Court in Abuja on a 10-count charge related to the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers from an institution in Oriire Local Government Area (LGA) of Oyo state. The defendants, Abdulrazak Umar, Yunusa Musa, and Shamsu Adamu Sani, all from Suleja LGA in Niger state, face charges including terrorism, kidnapping, concealment of information, incitement, and illegal mining. The charges were formally filed on the same day, marking one of the most significant prosecutorial steps in connection with the fatal kidnapping that drew widespread attention to abduction-for-ransom activities in south-western Nigeria.

Details of the Charges

According to the prosecution, the three defendants allegedly conspired with three others—Muhammad Sani, Jibril Mohammed, and Ibrahim Khabab—to carry out the abduction between January and May 2026. The alleged conspiracy contravenes Section 26(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. Beyond the conspiracy charge, the defendants are also accused of actively aiding the abduction and withholding information about the identities and movements of the alleged masterminds, despite being aware of the plot and its details.

Umar is known by the aliases Abu Khalifa and Abu Khalid, Musa goes by Yunusa bin Musa, and Sani is identified as Abu Itisar. The charges were filed under the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, 2022, reflecting the government's strict stance against such crimes.

Government's No-Mercy Policy

Government insiders indicated that President Bola Tinubu's administration maintains a strict "no mercy" policy against terrorists, bandits, and other armed criminal groups. The arraignment underscores the federal government's commitment to prosecuting those involved in the abduction, which occurred in Oriire LGA, Oyo state, and resulted in the deaths of nine people during a rescue operation.

Background of the Abduction

The abduction involved armed bandits attacking three schools in the Yawota and Ahoro Esienle communities of Oriire LGA in May 2026. The victims, including 39 pupils and teachers, were held captive for more than 50 days before being rescued. One of the victims, Rachael Alamu, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde have spoken about the captivity and the rescue operation.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, called on the federal and state governments to provide psychological support, trauma counselling, and rehabilitation for the rescued victims. She emphasized that recovery must extend beyond physical release, making the appeal during Senate plenary while contributing to a motion on the rescue.

Significance of the Arraignment

This arraignment represents a major step in addressing the spread of abduction-for-ransom activities into south-western Nigeria. The charges include illegal mining, indicating a possible link between criminal activities and natural resource exploitation. The case is being closely watched as a test of the government's resolve to combat terrorism and kidnapping.
