The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a South African woman at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja for attempting to smuggle 5.75 kilograms of heroin into Nigeria. The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Nwabisa Mafanya, was apprehended during routine screening of passengers arriving from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on an Ethiopian Airlines flight.
Concealment Method and Discovery
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the heroin was carefully concealed in the false bottom of Mafanya's suitcase. The discovery was made when NDLEA officers, acting on intelligence, subjected the luggage to a thorough search. The agency's sniffer dogs also alerted handlers to the presence of the illicit substance. Babafemi stated that the suspect had arrived from South Africa via Addis Ababa and was attempting to transit through Abuja to an undisclosed destination.
Suspect's Profile and Statement
Preliminary investigations revealed that Mafanya, a resident of Johannesburg, claimed she was offered a sum of $3,000 to transport the suitcase to Nigeria. She told NDLEA operatives that she was approached by a man in South Africa who promised her the payment upon successful delivery. The suspect admitted she knew the package contained illegal drugs but agreed due to financial hardship. Babafemi quoted Mafanya as saying, "I needed the money to pay for my child's school fees. I regret my actions."
NDLEA's Commitment to Combating Drug Trafficking
The NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier General Buba Marwa (retired), commended the officers for their vigilance and reiterated the agency's resolve to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating through Nigerian airports. Marwa emphasized that the NDLEA has intensified surveillance and collaboration with international partners to intercept narcotics. He noted that the arrest underscores the agency's success in intercepting high-value drug shipments and warned that traffickers will face the full weight of the law.
Legal Proceedings and Potential Penalties
The suspect has been charged with unlawful possession and trafficking of narcotics, offenses that carry severe penalties under Nigerian law, including life imprisonment. The NDLEA has confiscated the heroin as evidence, and Mafanya is currently in custody awaiting trial. The agency also stated that it is working to identify the recipient of the drugs in Nigeria and the masterminds behind the smuggling attempt.
Broader Context of Drug Interdiction
This arrest is part of a series of recent successes by the NDLEA in intercepting illicit drugs at Nigerian airports and seaports. In the first half of 2026, the agency reported seizing over 1,200 kilograms of various narcotics, including cocaine, heroin, and cannabis, at entry points across the country. The NDLEA has also increased its use of technology, such as body scanners and advanced X-ray machines, to detect concealed drugs.
Public Health and Social Impact
The agency highlighted that heroin abuse poses significant health risks, including addiction, overdose, and the spread of blood-borne diseases through needle sharing. Marwa called on the public to support the NDLEA's efforts by providing information on drug traffickers and users. He also urged parents and guardians to educate their children about the dangers of drug abuse.
