The federal government has officially received the first batch of Nigerian citizens repatriated from South Africa. An Air Peace evacuation flight carrying the returnees, including women and children, touched down safely at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos at approximately 10:35 a.m. today, June 11.
Government Officials Present to Welcome Returnees
Top government officials were on hand to receive the returnees upon their arrival. The delegation included the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), and the Commissioner for Migrants and Refugees. Their presence underscored the federal government's commitment to the welfare of its citizens abroad.
Assurances of Federal Support and Reintegration
The officials assured the arriving citizens of immediate federal support and comprehensive long-term reintegration assistance. This includes help with resettlement, access to social services, and other measures to ensure a smooth transition back into Nigerian society.
Upcoming Repatriation Flights Scheduled
The federal government has confirmed that the repatriation exercise will continue throughout the month. Subsequent evacuation flights are scheduled to take place on June 15, June 18, June 22, and June 24, 2026. This phased approach aims to bring back all willing Nigerian nationals from South Africa in an orderly manner.
