Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), in collaboration with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), have apprehended five individuals linked to the unlawful use of firearms during a social event in Maiduguri, Borno State. The incident, which occurred at the Ngomari general area, tragically resulted in the death of a young girl.

Details of the Arrest and Incident

The Media Information Officer for OPHK, Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, identified the suspects as Muhammad Husaini, 28; Abba Jiddu, 25; Abba Kolo Mohammed, 20; Ali Adam, 20; and Nura Mohammed, 18. All suspects are currently in custody and will be handed over to appropriate authorities for further investigation and prosecution under existing laws.

According to Uba, the event took place at approximately 2:00 p.m. on 4 April 2026 at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Teachers Staff Quarters. Vigilantes, later identified as members of an escorts team attached to a Local Government Area Chairman, engaged in sporadic firing into the air during a wedding celebration. This reckless act led to the fatal shooting of the young girl.

Investigation and Condemnation

A comprehensive investigation has been initiated in partnership with relevant state authorities, including the Office of the Senior Adviser on Security to the Borno State Government. The aim is to fully ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that all culpable parties face justice.

The Theatre Command strongly condemned the act, describing it as highly unprofessional, unauthorized, and a clear violation of established regulations governing firearm handling and use. It reiterated that the CJTF operates strictly as a support group and is not permitted to engage in indiscriminate use of firearms, especially in civilian environments.

Uba reported that the general security situation in the affected areas remains calm, with troops maintaining heightened vigilance to uphold law and order. The Theatre Command has extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of civilians.
