Tragic Death of 8-Year-Old Girl at Kano Road Construction Site

An 8-year-old girl, Siyama Idris, has tragically died after she accidentally fell onto an exposed iron rod at an ongoing road and drainage construction site in Kano State. The incident occurred at Tudun Wada quarters in the Nassarawa Local Government Area, raising serious concerns about safety measures at public construction projects.

Details of the Incident

According to an eyewitness, Abdulrashid Yusuf, the tragedy took place on Saturday, March 14, 2026, near Tudun Wada Primary School. At the time, reconstruction and expansion work was actively underway on the road, including the construction of drainage channels. Yusuf reported that the girl was sent to a nearby provision shop to buy something for iftar, the evening meal during Ramadan, when the accident happened.

He explained that the drainage under construction had exposed iron rods, and there was no proper pedestrian crossing available. Residents were forced to use a makeshift wooden plank bridge, locally known as a gadar katako, to cross the area. While attempting to navigate this hazardous crossing, Siyama Idris slipped and fell onto one of the exposed iron rods, leading to her fatal injuries.

Safety Concerns and Community Impact

This incident underscores significant safety lapses at the construction site. The lack of adequate pedestrian pathways and proper barriers around exposed materials poses a severe risk to public safety, especially for children and other vulnerable residents. The community has expressed shock and grief over the loss of the young girl, calling for immediate improvements in safety protocols at such sites.

Authorities are urged to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident and implement stricter safety standards to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The death of Siyama Idris serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring construction zones are secure and accessible for all members of the public.
