Operatives of the Nigerian Police Force have apprehended a suspected gun runner, identified as Abubakar Muhammad, along with several arms and ammunition in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State. The arrest occurred during an intelligence-led operation that resulted in the recovery of three AK-47 rifles and two rifle magazines.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Muhammad is an indigene of Mokwa Local Government Area in Niger State. He was intercepted while transporting the weapons to Funtua in Katsina State. Security sources indicate that the suspect confessed to involvement in arms transactions in collaboration with unidentified individuals based in Maigatari, Jigawa State.
Confession and Details
Muhammad reportedly stated that he collected the weapons in Maigatari and was heading to Katsina State when operatives intercepted him in Gezawa. He admitted that he was instructed to deliver the rifles and magazines to a specific individual in Funtua.
Security officials noted that the arrest followed credible intelligence gathered by the agency, which enabled operatives to track the suspect’s movement and apprehend him before reaching his destination.
Ongoing Investigation
Investigations have commenced to uncover those behind the supply chain and the wider network involved in the illicit arms trade. A security source stated, “Investigators are working to uncover the routes and methods used in transporting the weapons from their source to their intended destination, with a view to dismantling any wider arms trafficking operation.”
The source added that Muhammad remains in custody while further investigations continue. “Appropriate legal action is expected to follow upon the conclusion of the investigation and subject to the outcome of the findings,” the source concluded.
