A joyous wedding celebration in the Ikotun area of Lagos turned tragic on Saturday night, May 2, when gunmen invaded an after-party and killed two people, including the bride's father and a hypeman identified as Victor.
Attack Details
The incident occurred on Governor's Road, Oviawe Street, shortly after the formal wedding ceremony had concluded and guests had moved to a nearby venue for continued festivities. According to eyewitnesses cited by The Punch, the party was in full swing when armed men suddenly arrived and opened fire, forcing guests to flee in panic.
A resident reported that Victor was on stage entertaining guests when the attackers targeted him. He was allegedly dragged outside and assaulted with weapons as chaos erupted throughout the area.
Bride's Father Intervenes
Another witness stated that the situation escalated when the bride's father attempted to intervene after witnessing the attack. In an effort to calm the situation and protect the hypeman, he was also shot. Both men died at the scene.
Suspected Cult Violence
A community source, who noted that the gunmen fired indiscriminately, explained that the attackers appeared focused on their target but ended up affecting innocent bystanders. Residents later suggested the violence may not be directly related to the wedding itself but rather linked to ongoing cult-related tensions in the area, which have seen similar clashes recently.
One local described Victor as a familiar face in the neighborhood, well known for his energetic performances at events. The attack instilled fear across the community, with many residents and shop owners rushing indoors as security concerns grew.
Police Investigation
When contacted on Monday, May 4, the state Police Command spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that the incident is under investigation. She added that the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti for further action.
