Gunmen have killed a former councillor, Daniel Danjuma Chong, also known as "Hon. Star," in a late-night attack on Torok village in the Rim Community of Riyom Local Government Area (LGA), Plateau state. The incident occurred on Sunday, August 2, at approximately 11:45 p.m., according to residents and a report by Vanguard.
Attack Details and Immediate Aftermath
The attackers opened fire on the village, causing panic among residents. One resident, Mrs. Cynitha Dung, described the scene: "We heard heavy gunshots late in the night. Everyone ran for safety. By the time people came out, Hon. Daniel had been shot. It was a terrifying experience, and the community is still in shock."
In addition to the killing, another resident, David Dachollom Danjuma, sustained gunshot wounds during the assault and was receiving medical treatment at the time of reporting. The attack has left the community in a state of fear and mourning.
Condemnation from Berom Youth Moulders Association
The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) issued a statement condemning the attack, describing it as a "disturbing assault" on the people of Riyom LGA. The group noted that the assailants used the cover of darkness to carry out the attack, shooting residents before fleeing.
The association's National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, signed the statement and extended condolences to the family of the deceased and the Torok community. The statement also wished David Dachollom Danjuma a speedy recovery.
Demands for Justice and Security
BYM called on security agencies and the Plateau state government to launch an immediate manhunt for the perpetrators. "We call on security agencies and the Plateau state government to immediately go after the perpetrators of this attack and ensure they are arrested and brought to justice," the group said.
The association further urged authorities to dismantle criminal hideouts in the area and renewed its call for a ban on open grazing, alleging that criminal elements have exploited the practice. "The continuous killing of innocent citizens is unacceptable. Those responsible must face justice," BYM added.
Police Response and Broader Context
Attempts to reach the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Alfred Alabo, for an official reaction were unsuccessful, as he had not responded before the report was filed.
This incident is part of a worrying trend of violence in Plateau state. Earlier, Legit.ng reported the killing of Godwin Vonga, a former councillor representing Nasarawa Ward in Langtang South LGA, who was attacked while returning home with his children.
The Plateau state government and security agencies have yet to issue public statements on the latest attack, but the community and local groups are demanding urgent action to prevent further bloodshed.
